Tue Oct 15 09:46:15 UTC 2024: ## North Korea Destroys Inter-Korean Roads Amid Rising Tensions

**SEOUL, South Korea** – In a dramatic escalation of tensions, North Korea blew up sections of inter-Korean roads on Tuesday, following accusations that South Korea flew drones over its capital, Pyongyang.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the explosions, stating that the military is bolstering its readiness and surveillance posture. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had previously called a meeting of top military and security officials, labeling the alleged drone flights as a “serious provocation” and outlining unspecified military actions in response.

North Korea has threatened to launch strikes against South Korea if drones are detected again, and has already placed frontline artillery and army units on standby. South Korea, while refusing to confirm the drone flights, has warned of stern action should the safety of its citizens be threatened.

The destruction of the roads marks a significant step towards severing ties with South Korea, solidifying it as North Korea’s primary enemy and abandoning the decades-long pursuit of peaceful unification. The roads, along with rail lines, were reconnected during a period of détente in the 2000s, but their operations were gradually suspended due to disagreements over North Korea’s nuclear program.

North Korea has also announced plans to permanently block its border with South Korea and construct defense structures, citing the “confrontational hysteria” of South Korean and U.S. forces. South Korean officials report that North Korea has been reinforcing its border with anti-tank barriers, mines, and other measures since earlier this year.

The escalating tensions raise serious concerns about the potential for further conflict on the Korean Peninsula.
