Tue Oct 15 01:25:29 UTC 2024: ## NASA’s Europa Clipper Embarks on Journey to Search for Life on Jupiter’s Moon

**CAPE CANAVERAL, FL -** A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket successfully launched NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft on Monday morning, marking the beginning of a 5.5-year journey to Jupiter’s icy moon. The probe is expected to arrive in 2030 and spend over four years studying Europa’s potential for harboring life.

The launch, which was initially delayed due to Hurricane Milton, saw the spacecraft lift off at 9:06 a.m. Pacific time. The Falcon Heavy rocket, with its side boosters providing extra thrust, successfully sent Clipper on its 1.8-billion-mile journey. After separating from the rocket, Clipper entered a “coasting orbit” around Earth before using a second engine burn to escape Earth’s gravitational pull.

The Europa Clipper, the largest planetary probe ever built by NASA, is designed to explore Europa’s vast subterranean ocean, which scientists believe could be a suitable environment for life. The probe is equipped with a suite of instruments to study the moon’s ocean, search for organic compounds, and assess the potential for habitability.

“The community is really fortunate to have new rockets with these heavy lift capabilities available to them,” said Matthew Shindell, planetary science and exploration curator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. “If you were trying to launch a mission like this a decade ago, you couldn’t do it.”

Clipper’s journey to Europa will not be direct. It will utilize a gravity assist from Mars early next year, followed by a slingshot maneuver around Earth in late 2026, before finally reaching Jupiter’s icy moon.

Upon arrival, the probe will fly by Europa dozens of times, collecting data and meticulously mapping the moon’s surface. At the end of its mission, Clipper will be intentionally steered into one of Jupiter’s rocky moons to ensure the spacecraft doesn’t contaminate Europa.

The $5-billion Europa Clipper mission represents a culmination of decades of scientific exploration. Since NASA’s Galileo probe discovered evidence of a global ocean beneath Europa’s icy shell, scientists have been eager to explore its potential for hosting life.

This ambitious mission represents a significant step forward in the search for life beyond Earth. As Europa Clipper embarks on its long journey, scientists and space enthusiasts alike eagerly await the groundbreaking discoveries it will reveal.
