**Mumbai, India -** Alia Bhatt’s latest thriller, “Jigra,” failed to ignite the box office despite a Dussehra holiday weekend. The film, directed by Vasan Bala, collected around Rs 16 crore nett in India during its opening weekend, according to trade website Sacnilk. While Saturday saw Rs 6.55 crore in earnings, Sunday saw a dip to Rs 5.65 crore.
Critics and audiences delivered mixed reviews, and the film’s performance fell short of expectations. “Jigra” now faces a crucial Monday, as a strong opening week is essential for its long-term success. The prison-break action drama has three weeks before the Diwali release of “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” and “Singham Again” could potentially impact its run.
“Jigra” fell behind “Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Vala Video (VVKWWV),” a family comedy starring Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri, which collected Rs 18.65 crore nett in India over its opening weekend. While neither film achieved substantial box office success, “VVKWWV” managed to outperform “Jigra” despite both films failing to capitalize on the festive weekend.
The lackluster performance of both films has raised concerns about the state of the Hindi film industry. Hopes are now pinned on “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” and “Singham Again” to revive the festive box office when they release on November 1.
