Mon Oct 14 09:21:52 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Gears Up for Monsoon: 1913 Helpline Activated, Volunteers Mobilized

**Chennai, October 13, 2024:** With the Northeast monsoon approaching, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is implementing comprehensive measures to mitigate potential flood risks and ensure the safety of residents. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, during an inspection of the Integrated Command and Control Centre on Sunday, announced the activation of a dedicated helpline – 1913 – for residents to access information on relief centers, food supplies, and flood volunteers.

“We have strengthened preparedness at the Command Centre,” stated Mr. Stalin, emphasizing the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to protecting residents’ lives and property. “The number of personnel manning the call center has been increased to 150, working in four shifts to address civic issues flagged by residents.”

He also urged citizens to utilize the ‘Tamil Nadu Alert’ app for rain-related updates and to report incomplete drains on social media. “The Meteorological Department has forecast 20 cm of rainfall,” he cautioned, highlighting the proactive steps taken.

GCC has mobilized over 13,000 volunteers for flood relief and rescue, alongside 113 high-capacity pumps, and has ensured all wards have designated relief centers. The corporation has also cleared silt from 31 railway culverts in Chennai and directed MLAs to oversee food and water provision at relief centers.

Addressing potential hazards, the city has begun monitoring flood-prone areas, focusing on reducing risks posed by electricity lines and cables. Additional EB workers from other districts have been deployed, and 356 pumping stations are equipped with generators for operation during flooding. Unfinished stormwater drains have been cordoned off, and residents are encouraged to report open drains on X (formerly Twitter).

Further bolstering its response capacity, GCC has prepared 673 “super sucker” and jet-rodding machines, along with 83 additional sewer lorries. “We are fully prepared to handle the monsoon season and ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens,” asserted Mr. Stalin.
