**Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh:** Tensions flared in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district on Monday following a clash between two communities during Durga idol immersion on Sunday. The violence resulted in the death of one person and several injuries. A hospital and shops were also set ablaze, leading authorities to suspend internet services in the area.
The incident occurred in the Mahasi area on Sunday when an argument erupted between two groups during the procession. One individual from the Hindu community was fatally shot, triggering widespread unrest. Police arrested 30 individuals in connection with the incident and are actively searching for the main accused.
On Monday morning, protests against the murder turned violent, forcing police to resort to lathi charges and tear gas to control the situation.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognizance of the situation and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. He assured the public of their safety while directing officials to identify and take strict action against those involved in the violence and those responsible for any negligence. He also ordered that the immersion of idols be completed on time with the assistance of religious organizations.
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also appealed for peace and patience, assuring the public that the state government would not tolerate any attempts to disrupt peace and harmony. He emphasized that those who protect rioters will be held accountable and strict action will be taken against the culprits.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Fakhrul Hasan Chaand criticized the BJP government, alleging that it was incapable of maintaining law and order in the state. He cited the incident as evidence of the administration’s shortcomings and pointed to lapses in police and intelligence operations.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and highlights the need for heightened security measures and inter-community dialogue to ensure peace and order during religious processions in the state.
