**Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh:** Tensions erupted in Bahraich on Sunday, October 13, after clashes broke out between two groups during a Durga idol immersion procession. The violence, which reportedly stemmed from disputes over music playing during the procession, led to the death of a 22-year-old man and several injuries.
The clashes erupted when stones were thrown and gunshots were fired at the procession as it passed through the Mahsi sub-division. In the aftermath, rioters set fire to a hospital, a medical store, and a motorbike showroom. The incident prompted the district administration to suspend internet services in Mahsi and seal all border areas to prevent further escalation.
Police have deployed heavy forces, including Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UPSTF) units, to control the situation. Drones are being used to monitor the area while residents whose homes were damaged in the clashes are being rescued.
Police have detained at least 30 people, including one man identified as Salman, who was arrested after evidence of shots being fired from his home and shop was found. A case has also been registered against ten other individuals, six of whom have been identified.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath has taken note of the incident and called for strict action against those involved. He has also assured the public that the immersion of idols will continue under the watchful eyes of police and administrative officials.
The victim’s family members have refused to perform his last rites until the accused are arrested, adding to the tension in the area.
Bahraich SP Vrinda Shukla stated that the situation is under control and police are working to identify and apprehend the remaining culprits.
Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan urged people to not take the law into their own hands and to address grievances through official channels. He condemned the use of religion as a tool for violence, stating that such incidents weaken the country and society.
