Mon Oct 14 08:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Religious Violence Erupts in Bahraich During Durga Visarjan, One Dead, Internet Suspended

**Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh:** Tensions escalated in Bahraich on Monday following a violent clash during the Durga idol immersion procession in Mahsi’s Maharajganj area. The incident, which began on Sunday evening, resulted in the death of one man, Ram Gopal Mishra, and widespread unrest.

The violence erupted when the procession, accompanied by music and celebratory drums, reached the vicinity of Abdul Hamid’s house. Allegations surfaced that members of the Muslim community objected to the loud music and hurled stones at the procession. This triggered retaliatory attacks from the Hindu community, leading to a chaotic exchange of stones and gunfire.

Mishra, 22, succumbed to gunshot injuries during the violence. Despite the deployment of heavy police force, the situation deteriorated on Monday as residents refused to cremate Mishra’s body. A massive crowd, armed with sticks and tridents, marched towards the Tehsil, further escalating the unrest. The protestors vandalized vehicles and set a car ablaze on the highway.

In response to the escalating violence, the administration suspended internet services in the affected areas and deployed senior officials, including the ADG Law and Order, Amitabh Yash, to control the situation. Police resorted to lathi charge and fired shots in the air to disperse the rioters.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, spoke to the Director General of Police and is monitoring the situation closely. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and heightened security concerns.
