Mon Oct 14 09:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Maine Native Makes Hollywood Debut with Netflix Thriller Based on True Crime
**Scarborough native Ian McDonald’s first major screenwriting credit, “Woman of the Hour,” premieres on Netflix on October 18th. The film, directed by and starring Anna Kendrick, tells the chilling true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala and his appearance on the popular dating game show “The Dating Game” in 1978.**
Kendrick, who grew up in Portland, was immediately drawn to the script’s emotional depth and the unique perspective it brought to the story of Alcala, who was convicted of seven murders. McDonald, who also grew up in Maine, says he’s always been fascinated by true crime and thrillers, and Alcala’s story – a killer appearing on a national TV show while on a killing spree – seemed ripe for a film.
“Woman of the Hour” follows Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress played by Kendrick, who went on “The Dating Game” episode featuring Alcala. The film explores Alcala’s crimes and his ability to charm and deceive potential victims, showing the danger he posed before, during, and after his TV appearance.
McDonald, who started writing scripts after quitting sports in high school, credits Stephen King as an inspiration for pursuing a career in writing. His journey from Maine to Hollywood has been marked by determination and a desire to tell compelling stories. He hopes “Woman of the Hour” will be a turning point in his career, opening doors to new opportunities and allowing him to bring his own unique voice to the screen.
The film, which was shot in Vancouver, Canada, has already garnered attention after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is expected to be a chilling and thought-provoking thriller that sheds light on the dark side of a seemingly innocent dating game show.
