**LOS ANGELES** – Hulu has launched its first original series produced entirely in Spanish, “La Máquina”, a boxing drama exploring themes of friendship, sociopolitical forces, and the bittersweet nature of success.
The series, a decade in the making, is spearheaded by Mexican actors and producers Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, who also star in the show.
“We wanted to tell a story about saying goodbye to success,” shared Bernal, explaining the series’ central theme. “How success can be a trap, and how no one teaches you how to step away from it.”
Luna, who plays Andy Luján, Esteban La Máquina’s (Bernal) best friend and manager, added: “The idea came to us ten years ago, to tell the story of someone who wants to leave it all behind but just can’t.”
“La Máquina” draws inspiration from the rich history of boxing in Mexico, a passion shared by Luna and Bernal. Luna, who previously produced a documentary on legendary Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez, spoke about the impact of Chávez’s career: “I remember my whole country stopping to watch him fight. It brought everyone together, from north to south, regardless of social class.”
The series features a diverse cast and crew, reflecting the multicultural nature of Mexico City, where it was filmed. The show includes Spanish and Portuguese languages, Cuban and Filipino characters, and Latin American music spanning decades and genres.
“Hulu said, ‘Why not?'” Luna emphasized, highlighting the company’s embrace of diversity and inclusion.
“La Máquina” is a testament to the mission of La Corriente del Golfo, the production company co-founded by Luna and Bernal. “It shows the interconnectivity we have as humans and the planet,” said Bernal. “We want to bring this warmth and these stories everywhere.”
“La Máquina” is currently streaming on Hulu.
