Thu Oct 10 17:20:42 UTC 2024: ## Renowned Journalist and DMK Stalwart, Murasoli Selvam Passes Away at 84

**Chennai, October 10, 2024:** Murasoli Selvam, the Managing Editor of the popular Tamil daily “Murasoli” and son-in-law of the late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, passed away today at the age of 84 due to prolonged illness.

Selvam, born in April 1941, was known for his sharp intellect and contribution to the DMK’s intellectual sphere. He was a close confidante of Karunanidhi and played a significant role in shaping the “Murasoli” newspaper’s editorial direction. He was also the brother-in-law of DMK stalwart, Murasoli Maran, and husband of Karunanidhi’s daughter, Selvi.

Selvam’s journalistic career began after the passing of his brother-in-law, Murasoli Maran, where he took over the responsibility of writing the popular “box news” section of the “Murasoli”. These short news items, known for their wit and incisive commentary, garnered attention from both DMK supporters and the general public. He managed the “Murasoli” from 1989 and faced various challenges throughout his career.

One notable incident occurred in 1991 during the Jayalalithaa government, where Selvam was summoned to the Assembly after a “Murasoli” report on then DMK MLA, Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, triggered a privilege motion. Selvam was placed in a cage in the Assembly, a move that attracted controversy but also garnered him admiration for his courage. Karunanidhi lauded his bravery with a letter titled “Koondu Kandaen- Kudoogalam Kondaaen” (I saw the cage, I felt joy).

Selvam’s contribution to “Murasoli” was instrumental in shaping its identity. He was known for his sharp writing style, often incorporating subtle humour and political commentary, evident in his “Silanthi” column.

His final article for “Murasoli” was a response to Governor R.N. Ravi’s controversial statements about “Sanatana Dharma” on October 8th. He also penned a compilation titled “Murasoli – Sila Ninaivugal” (Murasoli – Some Memories), chronicling the newspaper’s journey through various challenges, attacks, and arrests, a valuable resource for budding journalists.

Selvam’s demise is a significant loss for the world of journalism and the DMK party. He will be remembered for his intellectual contributions, unwavering commitment to his principles, and his courageous spirit in the face of adversity.
