**Karachi, Pakistan:** English batting star Joe Root has etched his name in the annals of cricket history, becoming the first player to reach 5,000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC). The milestone was achieved during the ongoing first Test match against Pakistan, where Root was on 27 runs.
In a stellar career, Root has accumulated 5,005 runs in 59 WTC matches at a remarkable average of 51.59, including 16 centuries and 20 half-centuries. He leads the WTC run-scorers list by a substantial margin, with Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne (3,904 runs) trailing in second place.
The prolific Root continues his remarkable form in 2024, having already crossed the 1,000-run mark in Test cricket this year. This is the fifth time in his career he has achieved this feat, placing him alongside cricketing greats like Brian Lara, Matthew Hayden, Jacques Kallis, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, and Alistair Cook who have all achieved the same feat five times.
However, the ultimate target remains the record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who has achieved 1,000+ runs in a calendar year six times. Root’s current form suggests he has a strong chance to match Tendulkar’s record next year.
Overall, Root has played 147 Test matches, scoring over 12,400 runs at an average of over 50, with 34 centuries and 64 half-centuries.
In the ongoing first Test against Pakistan, England currently stands at 96-1 in their first innings, with Root (32) and Jack Crawley (64) at the crease. Earlier, Pakistan had posted a mammoth 556-10 in their first innings.
