Tue Oct 08 20:24:56 UTC 2024: ## FEMA Battles Misinformation Amidst Florida Hurricane Relief Efforts
**Miami, Florida** – As Hurricane Milton intensifies, just weeks after Hurricane Helene ravaged the state, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is facing a new challenge: widespread misinformation.
FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell has called the current misinformation surrounding the storms “the worst I have ever seen.” The agency has even created a rumor response page to address false claims, including those made by former President Donald Trump.
One of the most prominent debunked claims is that FEMA will only provide $750 to disaster survivors. FEMA clarifies that this amount is for immediate “Serious Needs Assistance” but survivors can apply for further aid.
Another false claim, this time propagated by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, states that FEMA is “actively blocking citizens who try to help.” FEMA officials have vehemently denied this, emphasizing that they welcome volunteer assistance and do not confiscate supplies.
FEMA’s acting director for response and recovery, Keith Turi, warns that such misinformation is detrimental, hindering the organization’s efforts to aid those affected by the storms. He stresses that spreading false information can discourage survivors from seeking the help they deserve.
The misinformation has also impacted FEMA workers, with some expressing fear for their safety due to the spread of false narratives.
While FEMA is currently investigating potential foreign actors involved in the misinformation campaign, similar tactics were observed during last year’s Maui fires, with “Pro-China actors” identified as contributing to the spread of disinformation.
FEMA is urging the public to rely on credible sources of information and to be aware of the potential impact of misinformation on disaster relief efforts.
