Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, during a visit to a French plant, called the reports “pure speculation.” Renault CEO Luca de Meo was even more dismissive, refusing to comment on the “rumors.”
Speculation about a potential merger initially arose earlier this year and was reignited this week by an Italian newspaper article. The article claimed that discussions regarding a merger were becoming more frequent, with the potential for significant economies of scale seen as a solution to the fierce competition in the automotive industry.
The rumors come at a time when Stellantis is facing challenges. The company’s shares have dropped significantly since March, losing 55% in value and resulting in a €47 billion loss.
