Tue Oct 08 14:21:06 UTC 2024: ## Powerful Hurricane Milton Heads for Florida’s Gulf Coast, Threatening Catastrophic Damage

**TAMPA, FL** – Just over a week after Hurricane Helene devastated Florida’s Big Bend region, the state braces for another major hurricane, Milton, expected to make landfall on Wednesday evening. Though downgraded from a Category 5 overnight, Milton remains a powerful Category 4 storm, with the potential to strengthen again before hitting the Tampa Bay area.

Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 51 Florida counties, urging millions to evacuate as the storm barrels towards the coast. While Milton’s wind speeds have slowed, DeSantis warned that it still poses a significant threat. “Even if it does weaken, you’re still looking at a major hurricane,” he said. “It is going to have really, really significant impacts.”

If Milton follows its current path, it could be the worst storm to hit Tampa in over a century. The hurricane is one of only 40 on record to reach Category 5 status in the Atlantic and one of only seven to escalate from Category 1 to Category 5 in less than 24 hours.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of a large and destructive storm surge along Florida’s west coast, urging residents to heed local evacuation orders immediately. Heavy rainfall is expected, potentially exceeding 15 inches in some areas, leading to widespread flooding.

The storm’s rapid intensification has strained Florida’s already overwhelmed emergency services, still recovering from Helene’s aftermath. FEMA acknowledged that their resources are stretched thin, with limited personnel available to assist in both disaster zones.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak period typically spanning August to October. This year, the season is progressing earlier than usual, with Milton marking the 13th named storm. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has warned that FEMA lacks the funds to adequately address the increasing number of storms and calls for Congressional action to provide supplemental funding for recovery efforts.

With Milton bearing down on Florida, residents are urged to remain vigilant, heed all warnings from local officials, and take immediate action to secure their safety and property.
