Tue Oct 08 15:28:37 UTC 2024: ## Congress’s Focus on Jat Community Backfires in Haryana Election
The Congress’s strategy in the recent Haryana elections, heavily focused on wooing the Jat community, has been attributed to their failure to regain power after a decade. The party’s overreliance on former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his internal power struggle with Dalit leader Kumari Selja alienated other communities and ultimately led to the BJP’s victory.
Despite exit polls predicting a close race, the BJP secured a record third consecutive term by winning 48 seats. The Congress, while improving its tally by seven seats, managed to win only 37.
The BJP’s success can be attributed to its focus on garnering support from non-Jat communities, particularly the OBC and Brahmin communities, while effectively capitalizing on the internal divisions within the Congress. The party’s candidate list was heavily dominated by OBC and Brahmin candidates, while Hooda, the Congress’s Jat face, prioritized his loyalists from the community.
The Congress’s internal conflict, symbolized by the rift between Hooda and Selja, further weakened their campaign. Selja, known for her influence among the Dalit community, was marginalized within the party and her supporters received only a handful of tickets. Her frustration was evident in her absence from the campaign and the manifesto launch event. This division within the Congress allowed the BJP to exploit the situation, with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar even urging Selja to join their party.
The Congress’s strategy also overlooked the significant Dalit voter base in Haryana, with the party concentrating its efforts on the Jat community. The BJP, on the other hand, strategically consolidated non-Jat voters, recognizing the divisions among the Dalits and effectively utilizing the organizational strength of the RSS to reach rural voters. This strategy, coupled with the fragmented Dalit vote due to alliances between other parties, further contributed to the BJP’s victory.
The Congress’s failure in Haryana highlights the importance of a balanced strategy in elections, emphasizing the need to engage with all communities and address their concerns effectively. The party’s reliance on a single community, coupled with internal conflicts, ultimately proved to be their undoing.
