Tue Oct 08 02:40:54 UTC 2024: ## Indian Air Force Celebrates 90th Anniversary: From Humble Beginnings to Global Powerhouse

**Chandigarh, India** – The Indian Air Force (IAF) commemorates its 90th anniversary today, marking a remarkable journey from a small auxiliary force to a globally respected and powerful air power.

The IAF’s foundation was laid on October 8, 1932, with the passage of the Indian Air Force Act, 1932. The first flying unit, No. 1 Squadron, was commissioned in Karachi the following year, equipped with Westland aircraft and led by a British Commanding Officer.

However, the seeds of the IAF were sown even earlier. Indian officers fought in World War I, with some even receiving posthumous honors for their bravery.

Following the recommendations of a 1927 committee, the British government approved the creation of the IAF in 1928, open to individuals of all faiths and castes from across India.

The first batch of Indian officers graduated from the RAF Academy in 1932, including Subroto Mukerjee, who went on to become the IAF’s first Chief of the Air Staff.

During World War II, the IAF played a crucial role in halting the Japanese advance in Burma, engaging in numerous missions across the eastern hemisphere, and earning the title of “Royal Indian Air Force.”

Post-independence, the IAF has participated in four wars with Pakistan, as well as numerous humanitarian and peacekeeping operations around the world. Today, it boasts a diverse inventory of indigenous, western, and eastern origin platforms, capable of operating across all conflict spectrums.

“From a miniscule force, the IAF has transformed to a highly trained, multi-dimensional force operating a diverse inventory of indigenous, western and eastern origin platforms capable of operating across the entire spectrum of conflict and living up to its motto of ‘Touch the Sky with Glory’,” stated a spokesperson for the IAF.

The IAF’s journey is a testament to its dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to serving the nation. As it celebrates 90 years of service, the IAF looks forward to continuing its mission of ensuring India’s security and standing tall as a global air power.
