**Stockholm:** Geoffrey Hinton, this year’s Nobel Prize winner in Physics, has raised concerns about the potential dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking after the announcement, he stated that while AI holds immense promise, its potential negative effects should not be overlooked.
Hinton believes AI will revolutionize society, much like the industrial revolution, but instead of augmenting physical strength, it will enhance human intellectual capabilities. “We’ve never had anything as capable as this,” he warned, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding its impact.
While AI offers potential benefits like improved healthcare and increased productivity, Hinton stressed the need for caution, particularly regarding the risks of AI becoming uncontrollable.
The “Godfather of AI” further revealed that he recently resigned from Google to work freely on mitigating the risks associated with AI. “I believe AI is extremely dangerous. I don’t think it’s currently smarter than humans, but that could change in the future, and that would be a serious problem,” he said.
Hinton, a Canadian researcher, shares the Nobel Prize with US researcher John Hopfield. His warnings serve as a stark reminder that while AI holds enormous potential, its development and deployment need to be approached with meticulous planning and ethical considerations.
