Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Mario Lemina has admitted that the team is struggling to understand manager Gary O’Neil’s tactics, and that the current defensive approach could lead to relegation.
Following a devastating 5-2 defeat at Brentford, where Wolves conceded four goals in the first half, Lemina expressed his concerns, saying, “We need to work harder to understand the gameplan. We can’t concede goals in the first minute. The way we are playing, the way we are defending right now, is going to get us in relegation.”
O’Neil has acknowledged the issues, admitting that his instructions are not being carried out effectively, leading to a disconnect between his vision and the players’ execution.
While Lemina acknowledged the team’s recent struggles, he defended O’Neil, stating that the manager has brought positive changes to the team and that blaming him for the current slump is unfair. However, the defeat at Brentford came after a winless run of seven games, the club’s worst start to a Premier League season in 20 years, leading to growing discontent amongst fans.
Despite the recent woes, Lemina remains optimistic, emphasizing that if the players can better understand and implement O’Neil’s game plan, they can avoid a relegation battle.
Brentford, meanwhile, continued their impressive start to the season, becoming the fourth consecutive team to concede an early goal to the Bees. Mikkel Damsgaard, who set up the first goal, jokingly commented on the trend, “The fans were disappointed there was 16 seconds more to wait but it is still very good and crazy to score in the first two minutes of four games straight.”
