**River Falls, WI** – Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of its 5-ounce packages of Alfalfa and Alfalfa Onion sprouts due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteria can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in vulnerable populations, including young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience mild symptoms like fever, headache, and digestive issues, Listeria infection can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
The recall affects products sold in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa at grocery stores and local co-ops. The affected packages are marked with lot numbers 300 (UPC 763247198915) or 246 (UPC 763247195945) on the top. No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall was prompted by routine company testing that revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the sprouts. Production has been halted while the company investigates the source of the contamination.
Consumers who have purchased the affected sprouts are advised to discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For any questions, they can contact Jack and the Green Sprouts at 715-425-9495, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
**Foodborne Illness Litigation**
Foodborne illness litigation is a growing area of legal practice. Attorney Bill Marler, a national expert in the field, began representing victims of foodborne illnesses in 1993, starting with Brianne Kiner, a survivor of the Jack in the Box E. coli O157:H7 outbreak. Marler secured a landmark $15.6 million settlement for Kiner. He also founded Food Safety News in 2009, a website dedicated to providing information about food safety issues.
