Sat Oct 05 22:30:56 UTC 2024: ## Yankees Leave Stroman Off ALDS Roster, Opting for Extra Relief Pitching

The New York Yankees have made a surprising decision, leaving starting pitcher Marcus Stroman off their ALDS roster despite his two-year, $37 million contract. The team opted to carry only 11 pitchers, citing the need for additional relief options in a series potentially requiring only three starters.

Manager Aaron Boone emphasized that the decision was difficult, especially considering Stroman’s strong start to the season. However, Stroman’s lack of swing-and-miss stuff, which would be valuable in a bullpen role, factored into the decision.

The Yankees chose to carry Tim Mayza as a second left-handed reliever alongside Tim Hill, instead of Stroman or fellow relievers Mark Leiter Jr. or Clayton Beeter. With off-days after Games 1, 2, and 4, the team can rely on Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and either Luis Gil or Clarke Schmidt as starters. The schedule also allows relievers to pitch more frequently, minimizing the need for a long reliever.

Stroman will remain stretched out and available should the Yankees need him in the ALCS, potentially in any role.

Meanwhile, the team’s roster includes speedy outfielder Duke Ellis, providing a pinch-running threat off the bench. Anthony Rizzo, who is recovering from fractured fingers, is considered a possibility for the ALCS if the Yankees advance.

The Yankees are expected to name their Game 3 starter, either Gil or Schmidt, by Tuesday.
