Fri Oct 04 23:56:49 UTC 2024: ## WNBA Players Fight for Higher Salaries Amidst League Popularity Surge

The WNBA is experiencing a surge in popularity, but players are demanding higher salaries to match. Despite the league’s success, rookie salaries remain at $76,000, while the league MVP earns only $200,000. This stark contrast with the median NBA player salary of roughly $12 million has sparked a call for revenue sharing, similar to the 50-50 split in the NBA.

“We’re not asking for the same salaries as the NBA,” said Napheesa Collier, veteran WNBA star and vice president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association executive committee. “What we’re looking for is revenue shares.”

Collier, along with Breanna Stewart, has founded Unrivaled, a 3v3 league aimed at providing WNBA players with additional opportunities during the offseason, further highlighting their commitment to growing the game.

The WNBA has made strides in player compensation, with the average annual salary exceeding six figures for the first time in 2020. However, players are looking for more, especially as the league attracts top talent like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.

“I love multiple commas,” said Aliyah Boston, the reigning rookie of the year, emphasizing the disparity in pay.

While reaching NBA-level salaries might be unrealistic, players like Collier are adamant about negotiating for fair compensation that reflects the league’s success.

“It is obviously the goal,” Collier said. “And I hope that we can get there.”

The league’s financial situation is a concern for Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who emphasized the league’s recent shift from “surviving” to “thriving.”

Despite the ongoing negotiations, players are enjoying the fruits of the league’s growth with amenities like charter flights, a luxury previously unavailable.

The WNBA’s evolution is a testament to the dedication of past and present players, who are paving the way for a more equitable future in women’s basketball.
