Fri Oct 04 05:00:42 UTC 2024: ## Wine Industry Embraces Sustainability, Offering Consumers Greener Choices

The wine industry is actively taking steps towards a more sustainable future, with organizations like the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing among producers. Wineries are benefiting from this collective effort, accessing resources, expertise, and guidance on certifications and sustainable strategies.

As consumers, we can support this positive change by choosing wines from producers actively engaged in these initiatives. Look for labels like Felton Road (New Zealand), Okanagan Crush Pad (Canada), CVNE (Rioja), Kir-Yianni (Greece) and Lanson (Champagne), all members of the IWCA.

“This is not an area where wineries need to be competing with each other,” says Rob Symington, director at Symington Family Estates, a founding member of both IWCA and The Porto Protocol. “It’s in our mutual interest to share.”

While organic farming can have some drawbacks, such as increased tractor use, it remains a valuable indicator of sustainable practices. “We have a lot to thank the organic movement for,” notes Anne Jones of sustainability consultancy Limestone & Jones. “It has created a consistent global agricultural standard across multiple categories, based on the principles of health, ecology, fairness and care.”

Domaine Lafage, a silver member of the IWCA, offers a prime example of a sustainable wine choice. Their Centenaire, Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, France 2022, is a delightful white cuvée with a deep, comforting flavor profile. This is just one example of how we can contribute to a greener future by making mindful choices in our everyday lives.
