Sat Oct 05 10:08:19 UTC 2024: ## Carcinogenic Ingredients Found in Popular Cakes in Karnataka, Warning Issued

**Bangalore, India** – A recent study by the Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has revealed the presence of carcinogenic ingredients in 12 out of 235 cake samples tested, including popular varieties like red velvet and black forest. The department has issued a warning to bakeries across the state, urging them to exercise caution with ingredients, especially regarding harmful chemicals and artificial colouring agents.

The study found excessive levels of artificial colours such as Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine in some cake samples. These colours, according to Dr. Manisha Arora, director of internal medicine at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, can cause cellular damage, increase the risk of cancer, and disrupt hormones and the immune system when consumed in excess. While occasional consumption may pose minimal risk, regular intake could have significant long-term health consequences, especially for children.

This warning follows the department’s previous ban on artificial colours in dishes like gobi manchurian, kebabs, and pani puri sauces. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is urging local bakeries to adhere to safety standards and ensure the health of consumers.

Consumers are advised to be mindful of where they source their baked goods from and to prefer products from trusted outlets. Staying informed about food safety regulations is also crucial.
