Fri Oct 04 20:46:09 UTC 2024: ## India Stumbles in T20 World Cup Opener, Losing to New Zealand by 58 Runs
**Dubai, UAE:** In a disappointing start to their T20 World Cup campaign, India suffered a crushing 58-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in their opening Group A match on Friday.
New Zealand, opting to bat first, posted a challenging total of 160 runs for the loss of four wickets. Captain Sophie Devine led the charge with a blistering 57 runs off 36 balls. The Kiwis got off to a strong start, putting on 55 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay.
India’s bowling attack, however, struggled to contain the New Zealand batters, with only Renuka Singh managing to pick up two wickets.
Chasing a target of 161, India’s batting line-up crumbled under pressure. They lost wickets at regular intervals and could only manage a paltry score of 102.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scored with 15 runs, but no other batter could make a significant contribution.
India’s batting woes were evident from the very beginning, as they lost their first three wickets in the powerplay. The loss of Harmanpreet Kaur in the 7th over dealt a major blow to their hopes of a comeback.
While the Indian team managed to win both of their warm-up matches, they were clearly not prepared for the challenge posed by a determined New Zealand side.
This defeat will be a significant setback for India’s hopes of winning the tournament. They will need to regroup and find a way to bounce back in their remaining matches.
