Fri Oct 04 05:27:43 UTC 2024: ## Daylight Saving Reminder: Check Your Smoke Alarms, Save Lives
With the clock change for daylight saving this weekend, RACV and the Country Fire Authority (CFA) are urging Victorians to take a vital step towards fire safety: checking their smoke alarms.
“An average of 3000 house fires occur in Victoria each year, making functional smoke alarms crucial,” emphasized RACV head of policy, James Williams. He stressed that working smoke alarms provide precious seconds to evacuate safely in case of a fire emergency.
“If you’re unsure about your smoke alarm, don’t hesitate to call a qualified professional,” Williams advised. Tenants are also reminded to report any issues with their smoke alarms to their property managers promptly, even though rental providers are responsible for their maintenance.
CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan echoed the importance of regular testing, advocating for a monthly check-up. “A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between waking up safely or not,” he stressed. He also recommended installing smoke alarms in bedrooms, living areas, hallways, and even games rooms for maximum coverage.
The CFA recommends using smoke alarms powered by 10-year lithium batteries for reliable protection and peace of mind. This small investment can significantly enhance home safety and potentially save lives.
