Dubai, UAE – The West Indies Women’s cricket team suffered their second consecutive defeat in their T20 World Cup warm-up matches, losing to defending champions Australia by 35 runs on Tuesday.
Australia, who posted 144 for 8, were led by Annabel Sutherland’s 38 off 28 balls and Ash Gardner’s 31 off 31. Aaliyah Alleyne and Afy Fletcher were the pick of the West Indies bowlers, taking two wickets each.
In reply, the West Indies were bowled out for 109 in 17.5 overs. Hayley Matthews top-scored with 42, while Qiana Joseph contributed 36. However, the team collapsed from 69 for 1 at the halfway stage, losing their last nine wickets for 50 runs. Alana King and Tayla Vlaemenck were the main destroyers for Australia, claiming 4 for 30 and 3 for 22 respectively.
The West Indies, who won the tournament in 2016, will be hoping to turn things around when their campaign officially starts on October 4th against South Africa in Dubai. They are grouped with South Africa, Scotland, Bangladesh, and England.
This defeat follows their 20-run loss to India in their first warm-up match on Sunday. The team will need to find their rhythm quickly to challenge for the title in the upcoming tournament.
