Wed Oct 02 13:55:50 UTC 2024: ## England Aims to Break T20 World Cup Drought, Australia Remains Favourites

The ninth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup kicks off this Thursday with a match between hosts Bangladesh and Scotland, setting the stage for a month of intense cricket action. Originally slated for Bangladesh, the tournament has been relocated to the United Arab Emirates due to recent political unrest, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board retaining hosting rights.

With just 23 matches over 18 days, the 10-team tournament promises high-stakes competition. The tournament will be held in Dubai and Sharjah, with the final scheduled for October 20th. Teams are divided into two groups of five, with the top two from each advancing to the semi-finals.

England, having won all eight T20s this summer, are eager to end their 15-year title drought. Led by Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone, they will be looking to claim their first championship since 2009. However, they face stiff competition from six-time champions Australia, who are targeting a fourth consecutive title. Despite this, England gained confidence from their 2-1 victory against Australia in the T20 portion of the 2023 Ashes.

Meanwhile, Scotland will be making their World Cup debut, aiming to upset the odds in Group B against Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, and South Africa. Led by Kathryn Bryce, Player of the Tournament in the Charlotte Edwards Cup this year, and her sister Sarah, Scotland boasts a strong all-round squad.

The tournament promises to be a thrilling affair, with many talented players vying for the coveted title. Keep an eye on Ashleigh Gardner (Australia), Nat Sciver-Brunt (England), Jemimah Rodrigues (India), Abtaha Maqsood (Scotland), Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka), and Hayley Matthews (West Indies) as they compete for glory in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
