**ANKARA** – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed hope that the upcoming US presidential election will usher in a new era of improved relations between the two countries. Speaking to Turkish journalists in New York following the UN General Assembly, Erdogan acknowledged Ankara’s disappointment with both Republican and Democratic administrations in the past.
“My hope is that whoever comes does not make us miss the outgoing one,” Erdogan stated, according to Turkish broadcaster Haberturk. “They all made us experience this disappointment. The Republicans and Democrats.”
Erdogan’s comments come after a period of strained relations between Turkey and the US, marked by disagreements on issues such as Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 missile defense systems. Former US President Donald Trump, a Republican, imposed sanctions on Turkey for the purchase, and Ankara was subsequently removed from the F-35 fighter jet program. Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s demand for reimbursement for the funds already invested in the program.
With the 2024 US presidential election looming, pitting Republican Donald Trump against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, Erdogan’s statement suggests a desire for a more stable and cooperative relationship between the two NATO allies.
