Tue Oct 01 08:45:49 UTC 2024: ## Grammy Winner Jacob Collier and Norwegian Pop Star AURORA Join Forces for Arctic Performance to Save the Oceans

**SVALBARD, NORWAY** – British six-time Grammy winner Jacob Collier and Norwegian alt-pop superstar AURORA have teamed up for a powerful performance in the Arctic, released today, to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect the oceans. The artists, who have never collaborated before, delivered a haunting mashup of their songs “A Rock Somewhere” and “The Seed” on a platform floating amidst icebergs in front of the Sveabreen glacier in Svalbard.

The performance, filmed in partnership with Greenpeace International, highlights the growing threats facing the oceans, including acidification, climate change, industrial fishing, and pollution. The organization is particularly concerned about deep-sea mining, which they argue poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems. The Norwegian government is currently considering allowing commercial mining operations in the Arctic, which has raised alarm bells for environmental groups.

Collier expressed his awe at the Arctic’s beauty and fragility, stating, “I was bowled over at the sheer magnitude of the Arctic – and also its deep fragility.” He stressed the importance of protecting the oceans as a vital ally in the fight against climate change.

AURORA echoed these sentiments, expressing her concern about humanity’s destructive impact on the natural world. “We need to understand, the more we interfere with, or the more we violate, nature we will have a lesser chance to survive the consequences of our actions,” she said. “We have to stop deep sea mining.”

Dr Laura Meller of Greenpeace Nordic emphasized the urgency of the situation. “We won a historic Global Ocean Treaty last year, which keeps our goal of protecting 30 percent of the world’s oceans by 2030 alive. But governments now want to mine the deep,” she said. “We hope this collaboration will inspire millions of people around the world to join our mission to protect the oceans for future generations.”

The performance comes as a new poll shows that more than half of Brits believe urgent action is needed to sign the Global Ocean Treaty into UK law. Greenpeace is urging governments to act now to protect the oceans, including a moratorium on deep-sea mining.

The video of the performance is available on Jacob Collier’s YouTube channel and in the Greenpeace Media Library.
