Wed Oct 02 10:21:12 UTC 2024: ## Jimmy Carter Turns 100, Making History as First US President to Reach Milestone
Former US President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday, becoming the first American president to reach the milestone. Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, has been receiving hospice care in his home state of Georgia for the past 19 months.
Despite his age and health challenges, Carter remains emotionally engaged and active. His grandson, Jason Carter, described him as “having experiences and laughing, loving.” The centenarian even expressed his desire to “make it to vote for Kamala Harris in November’s election.”
To mark the occasion, volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, a charity Carter has supported for 40 years, are building 30 homes in Minnesota this week. In Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia, festivities included a naturalization ceremony for 100 new US citizens and a military flyover featuring four F-18 jets.
Earlier this month, a star-studded concert in Atlanta raised over $1.2 million to celebrate Carter’s birthday and support The Carter Center. The event featured performances by numerous musical acts and recorded messages from other presidents.
Carter’s remarkable longevity has brought attention to the benefits of hospice care. Many have praised his decision to embrace hospice, recognizing it as a compassionate and comfortable option for those facing end-of-life care.
