Tue Oct 01 05:25:35 UTC 2024: ## Sylhet Strikers Deny Mashrafe’s Ownership Claim, Blame Former Chairman for Financial Issues
**Dhaka, Bangladesh:** Amidst allegations of forced ownership transfer, the Sylhet Strikers franchise of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has vehemently denied any ownership claims by former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.
A lawsuit was filed on Monday against Mashrafe by Sarwar Golam Chowdhury, the team’s former chairman, alleging that the ownership of the franchise was forcefully taken from him. However, in a statement released on social media, the Strikers refuted the allegations and provided a detailed account of the team’s financial struggles.
The statement clarifies that Mashrafe has never held any ownership stake in the team, and that ownership documents held by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also do not mention his name.
Instead, the team blamed Chowdhury for the financial hardships that plagued the franchise in the second season. They allege that Chowdhury, who initially held 60% ownership, failed to meet his financial obligations, leaving unpaid wages for players, management staff, and operational costs. This, according to the statement, led to the team’s inability to build a strong team for the second season, as they were burdened with clearing previous debts.
The statement further claims that Chowdhury voluntarily relinquished his ownership to the other co-owners in August 2022 after failing to settle the outstanding dues. They also stated that they possess copies of Chowdhury’s email and related documents confirming his decision.
The Strikers emphasized that the legal matters will be dealt with through the legal process and that they are committed to transparency and accountability to their fans.
This controversy comes at a time when the Bangladesh Premier League is undergoing significant changes and faces numerous challenges. The ownership disputes highlight the need for stronger governance and financial transparency within the league.
