**New Delhi, India** – Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has been awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honor in cinema. The announcement was made by Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Railways and Electronics and Information Technology.
The award, named after Dadasaheb Phalke, the “father of Indian cinema” and director of India’s first full-length feature film “Raja Harischandra” (1913), recognizes Chakraborty’s lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.
The 74-year-old actor, known for his versatility and charismatic screen presence, has starred in over 350 films across multiple Indian languages during his nearly five-decade career. He rose to fame with his debut in “Mrigayaa” (1976) and gained widespread recognition for his role in the iconic “Disco Dancer” (1982).
Chakraborty has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor and a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. His diverse filmography spans action, drama, and comedy genres in Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, and Telugu-language film industries.
Beyond his acting career, Chakraborty has been involved in charitable initiatives and served as a member of parliament. He received the Padma Bhushan award for his contributions to Indian cinema in 2016.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award selection committee, including industry figures Asha Parekh, Khushbu Sundar and Vipul Amrutlal Shah, chose Chakraborty for the honor. He will be presented with the award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8th.
