**ATTLEBORO, MA** – A vibrant block party held on Sunday brought together hundreds of Attleboro residents in support of a local effort to revive the historic Union Theater. The event, aptly titled “Turn On The Lights,” raised approximately $4,000 towards the renovation project.
The event featured a diverse range of activities, including live music, performances, games, raffles, and food from local vendors. The highlight of the evening was a screening of the classic film “Back to the Future,” projected on a large outdoor screen.
The Union Theater, built in 1928, has been a beloved landmark for generations of Attleboro residents. Jennifer Keating, Executive Director of Illuminate Creative + Theatrical Arts Co., is spearheading the effort to restore the theater to its former glory.
“It means a lot to people who grew up in Attleboro and remember the theater,” Keating said. “It’s part of their childhood, their favorite memories.”
Keating plans a multi-phase renovation project, with Phase I focusing on essential repairs, including a new HVAC system, fire alarms, and a temporary stage. Phase II will focus on upgrading the theater to professional standards with lighting, sound systems, and a “black box” theater on the balcony.
Illuminate is seeking funding through grants and community fundraising. The ultimate goal is to create a multi-purpose venue that can host theatrical productions, comedy shows, musical performances, and even serve as a classroom and conference center.
The theater’s history, dating back to its vaudeville era, is still visible in the apartments and dressing rooms on the upper floors. The original projectors remain in the projection room, a testament to the theater’s rich past.
The community’s enthusiasm for the project was evident at the block party. “I’ve been completely interested and went to check out the website, and I am just here to witness it and maybe be a part of it,” said Thomas Perry, a local resident.
Deidre Araujo, a member of the Downtown Attleboro Business Association, added, “It’s one of those things that’s going on that is very exciting — reviving, restoring, and reopening the Union Theater. That’s why I am here today.”
The success of the block party has fueled optimism for the future of the Union Theater. With community support and the dedication of Illuminate Creative + Theatrical Arts Co., the historic venue is poised to once again become a vibrant center for arts and culture in Attleboro.
