**Mumbai, India** – Renowned actor and former Rajya Sabha MP, Mithun Chakraborty, will be honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024. The award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema, will be presented to Chakraborty at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8th, 2024.
Chakraborty, known for his iconic role as Jimmy in the blockbuster film “Disco Dancer” (1982), expressed his humility and gratitude upon receiving the news. “I became speechless after getting such a prestigious award… I don’t know how to express this. I can’t cry, I can’t smile either. I am dedicating this award to my family and fans across the world,” he shared.
“Disco Dancer” catapulted Chakraborty to superstardom, becoming the first Indian film to earn over Rs 100 crore worldwide. The film played a pivotal role in popularizing disco culture in India, a genre that emerged from the fusion of various musical styles like R&B, funk, soul, and salsa.
The film’s success was fueled by its compelling rags-to-riches story, catchy music by Bappi Lahiri, and Chakraborty’s unique dance style. It broke box office records and ignited a widespread interest in disco music within Bollywood. “Disco Dancer” was particularly well-received in the Soviet Union, becoming the highest-grossing foreign film there.
The award comes at a time when the Indian stock market is experiencing fluctuations. The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty rebounded in early trade on Tuesday after a decline in the previous session, driven by buying in IT stocks and recovery in Japanese markets.
