USC, fresh off a disappointing 27-24 loss to Michigan, returns home to the Coliseum this Saturday to host the Wisconsin Badgers. Despite outgaining the Wolverines in total yardage, the Trojans struggled to contain Michigan’s powerful rushing attack, a potential problem against a Wisconsin team that relies heavily on the ground game.
The Badgers’ offense is already facing challenges, even before quarterback Tyler Van Dyke’s season-ending ACL tear. Sophomore Braedyn Locke, making just his fourth career start, will be under center against a USC defense that has shown improvement from last season.
Despite ranking 47th in rushing yards per game, Wisconsin struggles in efficiency, averaging only 4 yards per carry. Their red zone offense is also a concern, ranking near the bottom of the nation in red zone attempts and touchdown conversions.
“We can’t expect this team to suddenly take a giant leap under a backup quarterback,” says Michael Arinze, sports handicapper for the New York Post. “With Wisconsin’s touchdown red-zone conversion down 15.5% from last year, there’s no question that this offense has worsened.”
Arinze suggests betting on the Wisconsin team total under 17.5 points, citing the Badgers’ struggles against inferior opponents and Locke’s limited experience. USC, on the other hand, is looking to prove its defensive improvements against a struggling Wisconsin offense.
This game presents an opportunity for USC to rebound from their loss and demonstrate their defensive prowess against a team that seems to be in disarray. While the Trojans look to build on their early success, the Badgers face a difficult task against a determined USC defense.
