**Chennai, September 30, 2024:** Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state. The announcement was made on September 29 at Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan, where he assumed the additional portfolio of planning and development along with his existing role as Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development.
The appointment has sparked controversy, with the BJP criticizing the move as a case of “son-rise” politics within the INDIA bloc. The party alleged that Udhayanidhi’s lack of experience makes him unqualified for the Deputy CM position. BJP spokesperson Shezad Poonawala went further, claiming that DMK functions as a “private limited family run company” rather than a political party.
However, DMK allies and party MP Kanimozhi defended the decision, arguing that Chief Minister Stalin is democratically elected and his choices should be respected. They believe the move will benefit the party in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party Convenor Arvind Kejriwal extended his congratulations to Udhayanidhi on Twitter, wishing him continued success in serving the people of Tamil Nadu.
The appointment comes amidst a broader political landscape where the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, is facing criticism for perceived nepotism and a lack of meritocratic leadership. The BJP has seized on this opportunity to highlight these perceived shortcomings and mobilize support for their own party.
