Mon Sep 30 15:26:44 UTC 2024: ## Supreme Court Rejects Petition Seeking Inquiry Against Former Chief Justice Gogoi, Lawyer Reprimanded

The Supreme Court on September 30th dismissed a petition seeking an internal inquiry against former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, reprimanding the petitioner’s lawyer for making inappropriate remarks and attempts to “impeach” the former judge.

Chief Justice Dhananjaya Chandrachud expressed strong disapproval of the petition, questioning its merit and the lawyer’s conduct. He highlighted that former Chief Justice Gogoi is a retired judge who has served with distinction and cannot be subjected to an inquiry based on the petitioner’s request.

During the hearing, the lawyer used casual language, repeatedly saying “Yeah, Yeah” instead of “Yes” when addressing the court. Chief Justice Chandrachud remarked that the court is not a coffee shop and reprimanded the lawyer for this behavior.

The petitioner argued that his petition was valid and based on legal grounds, citing a previous instance where his plea for a review petition to be heard by a bench familiar with labor laws was rejected.

Chief Justice Chandrachud instructed the registry to review the petition while emphasizing the removal of former Chief Justice Gogoi’s name from the petition. The court further clarified that it cannot order an inquiry against a retired judge.
