New York, September 23, 2024: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the deteriorating security situation in the region.
The meeting, marked by a warm embrace between the two leaders, saw Modi reiterating India’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, including continued humanitarian assistance. He emphasized the need for a two-state solution as the only path towards lasting peace and stability in the region.
Modi recalled India’s early recognition of Palestine and conveyed India’s continued support for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations.
The two leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen the long-standing friendship between India and Palestine. This meeting comes on the heels of India’s first humanitarian aid shipment for the people of Gaza in July, totaling $2.5 million, which was directed to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
During his trip to New York, PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. This was the first meeting between Modi and the Kuwait Crown Prince.
PM Modi further addressed members of the Indian community in New York and held a roundtable conference with top tech leaders and CEOs in the US. He arrived in New York after attending the Quad Summit hosted by US President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware.
