**Budapest, Hungary:** The Indian chess contingent has etched its name in history, winning gold in both the open and women’s categories at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad held in Budapest. This is the first time India has achieved this feat, putting them alongside only China and the former Soviet Union in achieving a double gold win at a single Olympiad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the team’s achievement, calling it a “new chapter” in Indian sports. He congratulated the “unprecedented” men’s and women’s teams on their “remarkable achievement” and expressed hope that this success will inspire future generations of chess enthusiasts to excel in the sport.

The Indian men’s team secured victory in the open category by defeating Slovenia 3.5-0.5 in the final round. Similarly, the women’s team triumphed over Azerbaijan with the same score.

Previously, the Indian men’s team had won bronze medals in the Olympiad in 2014 and 2022, while the women’s team secured bronze in the 2022 edition held in Chennai.

This historic double gold win has ignited national pride and cemented India’s position as a powerhouse in the world of chess.
