Mon Sep 23 12:10:52 UTC 2024: ## “Laapataa Ladies” Selected as India’s Oscar Contender for Best International Feature
**Toronto, Canada** – Kiran Rao’s comedic film, “Laapataa Ladies,” has been chosen to represent India in the Best International Feature category at the 2025 Academy Awards. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, tells the story of two new brides accidentally switched at their weddings, embarking on drastically different paths.
“Laapataa Ladies” beat out the Cannes Grand Jury Prize-winning film, “All We Imagine As Light,” to secure the coveted nomination. The film’s light satire and cross-country rail car setting resonated with audiences on the festival circuit, and its international distribution rights were acquired by Yash Raj Films.
Despite India’s rich cinematic history, only three Indian films have previously received nominations in the Best International Feature category, a stark reflection of the country’s limited success in the Oscar race. “Laapataa Ladies” hopes to break this trend and achieve international recognition for its humorous and captivating storyline.
The deadline for Oscar submissions is November 14, with the shortlist for Best International Feature contenders to be announced on December 17. The nominations will be revealed on January 17, 2025, leading up to the 96th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.
