**Budapest, Hungary** – In a stunning display of chess prowess, India secured their maiden Chess Olympiad gold medal on Sunday, September 22nd, after defeating Slovenia in the final round of the competition.

Led by the stellar performances of D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi, India edged out China for the top spot in the open section. China, previously in second place, dropped points on two boards against the USA.

In the decisive match against Slovenia, Erigaisi outmaneuvered Jan Subelj, while Gukesh secured victory over Vladimir Fedoseev. After Erigaisi’s win, India needed just one more point to clinch the gold, which Gukesh swiftly delivered.

The Indian team exhibited remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, starting with an impressive eight consecutive wins. While they were held to a draw by defending champions Uzbekistan, they bounced back with a decisive victory against the top-seeded USA in the penultimate round, effectively sealing the title.

This triumph marks a significant improvement for India, who won bronze at the 2022 Olympiad held on home soil. Previously, India also secured bronze in the 2014 edition.

Gukesh, in particular, showcased his exceptional talent, performing brilliantly against the USA in the previous round. He demonstrated remarkable composure against top-seeded teams and even defeated the higher-ranked Caruana.

The team’s dominance solidified after a 3.5-0.5 victory over Iran on Friday, September 20th. This eighth consecutive win pushed India’s total to 16 points, establishing a commanding two-point lead over their closest rivals, Hungary and Uzbekistan.

Erigaisi, currently ranked fourth in the world, continued his impressive form, achieving a remarkable 7.5 points out of eight games. This performance catapulted him closer to the coveted 2800-rating mark. If he crosses this threshold, he will become the 16th player in history and only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to achieve this distinction.

Gukesh’s own stellar performance elevated him to 2785 rating points. This marks the first time ever that two Indians have simultaneously occupied top-five positions in the world rankings.

India’s historic gold medal win signifies a new era for Indian chess, highlighting the exceptional talent emerging from the country and setting the stage for future success.
