**GREEN BAY, WI -** The Green Bay Packers’ defense has taken a dramatic turn under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, with a surge in interceptions being the most noticeable change. The team has already recorded five interceptions in just two games, which is the highest in the NFL. In comparison, the Packers only managed 17 interceptions throughout the entire 2023 season.

Head coach Matt LaFleur, who brought in Hafley this offseason, emphasized that this increase in interceptions is a direct result of Hafley’s vision for the defense. “I would say our defense is predicated on vision,” LaFleur said. “And when you play with vision, typically you’re able to get more interceptions.”

Safety Xavier McKinney, a big-money free agent signing, has already snagged two interceptions, including one against star quarterback Jalen Hurts in the season opener. McKinney highlighted the impact of playing with a sense of instinct and speed, saying, “It gives us confidence as a defense. We get a better feel of … playing with our instincts and playing fast. I think that’s what it’s been doing.”

While the interceptions are a significant factor, Hafley is wary of relying on turnovers to cover up other areas of weakness. He acknowledges the need to improve in certain areas, particularly in limiting explosive plays by opposing offenses.

The Packers’ pass rush, however, hasn’t yet lived up to expectations. Despite a more free-flowing scheme that was intended to give players like Rashan Gary more opportunities to get to the quarterback, the Packers have only recorded three sacks so far this season. This may be partly due to the mobile quarterbacks they’ve faced, prompting a more disciplined approach from the defense.

Despite the mixed results, the Packers’ defense appears to be playing with a renewed sense of purpose under Hafley. The team is hoping that the improved play of the defense, particularly their ability to create turnovers, will translate into more victories.
