New York Magazine has placed its star political reporter, Olivia Nuzzi, on leave after she admitted to a potentially compromising relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a former subject of her reporting.
The magazine confirmed in a statement that Nuzzi, their Washington correspondent, acknowledged engaging in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while reporting on the campaign. This relationship, which Nuzzi confirmed was not physical, was deemed a violation of the magazine’s standards regarding conflicts of interest and disclosures.
While neither Nuzzi nor New York Magazine named Kennedy, multiple sources, including Status, The New York Times, and CNN, confirmed the relationship to be with the former presidential candidate.
Nuzzi has been placed on leave while the magazine conducts a third-party review. She has apologized for failing to disclose the relationship immediately, stating that she deeply regrets the situation and the disappointment it has caused, especially to her colleagues at New York Magazine.
Nuzzi, known for her in-depth reporting and exclusive interviews, has been a prominent figure in political journalism since her teenage years. She joined New York Magazine in 2017 and has since garnered recognition for her work, including a profile of Kennedy that predicted his campaign could disrupt the presidential race.
Kennedy, who ended his independent presidential run in August and endorsed Donald Trump, has denied any romantic relationship with Nuzzi. He has labeled her reporting as a “hit piece.”
This news comes as Nuzzi is working on a satirical drama for AMC and recently released a documentary series with Bloomberg. Her career in political journalism began as a teenager, and she has since worked for prominent publications like The Daily Beast, Politico, and The Washington Post.
