A U.S.-based watchdog organization, the New Tolerance Campaign (NTC), has offered a $1 million prize to any U.S. LGBTQ advocacy group willing to host a Gay Pride Parade in Gaza or the West Bank. The move is a direct challenge to organizations who have voiced support for Palestinian rights while often criticizing Israel, which NTC argues is the only gay-friendly country in the Middle East.
The NTC, led by former Log Cabin Republicans president Gregory T. Angelo, argues that this offer presents a chance for “Queers for Palestine” and other LGBTQ groups to prove their claims about Palestinian territories being “inclusive.”
The organization has faced pushback from major media outlets, with The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today all declining to run full-page ads for the campaign, citing safety concerns. Times Square also declined to host the ads, citing potential for violence against the buildings.
Despite these setbacks, NTC is running mobile billboards in New York City, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles, targeting the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, and other prominent LGBTQ organizations, urging them to prioritize LGBTQ rights in the region.
The offer has sparked intense debate, with some users highlighting the perceived hypocrisy of Palestinian territories claiming to be inclusive while facing accusations of persecution against LGBTQ individuals. Others argue that the initiative is a cynical attempt to discredit LGBTQ groups and further tensions between Israel and Palestine.
The debate reflects the complex and often fraught relationship between the LGBTQ community and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, raising critical questions about the nature of advocacy, the realities of life for LGBTQ individuals in the region, and the role of international organizations in promoting human rights.
