**Jamshedpur, India** – Tata Steel has significantly boosted its steel production capacity by commissioning India’s largest blast furnace at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha. The new furnace, part of the company’s ₹27,000 crore Phase II expansion, increases the plant’s capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 8 mtpa.

This expansion is a testament to Tata Steel’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for steel across various sectors including automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defence. The new blast furnace, with a volume of 5,870 m3, is equipped with advanced features for long campaign life and an eco-friendly design. It utilizes four top combustion stoves, a first in India, along with two preheating stoves for optimal fuel efficiency in hot metal production.

“The commissioning of India’s largest blast furnace at Kalinganagar sets a new benchmark in capacity, technology, and sustainability for the steel industry,” said TV Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel. “This expansion strengthens our position as a leader in high-end, value-added steel segments.”

The blast furnace also boasts a dry gas cleaning plant, a first for Tata Steel, which maximizes energy recovery from by-product gas. Furthermore, the plant implements a zero-process water discharge plan with rainwater harvesting.

With this expansion, Odisha has become the largest investment destination for Tata Steel in India, with a total investment exceeding ₹1 lakh crore over the past decade. The Phase II expansion at Kalinganagar also includes a pellet plant, coke plant, and cold rolling mill, each incorporating advanced technologies and sustainable practices.
