Fri Sep 20 11:06:00 UTC 2024: ## Russia Threatens West and Ukraine Over Potential Belarusian Attack

**MOSCOW** – Russia has issued a stark warning to the West and Ukraine, threatening “disastrous consequences” if Kyiv were to take any action against Belarus, a close Russian ally. The warning comes amid heightened tensions along the Belarusian-Ukrainian border and follows recent reports of Ukrainian incursions into Russian territory.

Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, expressed concern over what she called “provocative activity” by Ukraine near the Belarusian border. She explicitly stated that Russia would intervene to defend Belarus, where Moscow has deployed tactical nuclear weapons.

Zakharova’s comments followed a statement by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who, without providing evidence, suggested that Ukraine was planning an attack on Belarus. This speculation arose after Ukraine’s surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region on August 6th.

While Minsk has accused Ukrainian drones of violating its airspace and deployed additional troops to the border, Kyiv maintains that it has not observed any significant changes in the border region.

Zakharova accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of recklessly coordinating actions with Washington ahead of the US presidential election, referencing the Kursk incursion. She warned that “destructive forces” could escalate tensions in the region.

Russia’s threat underscores its commitment to defending Belarus, emphasizing the presence of a joint regional military grouping and Russian tactical nuclear weapons in the country.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry has firmly denied any hostile intentions toward Belarus, stating that it has never taken and will not take any unfriendly actions against the Belarusian people.

Despite these assurances, Russia’s warning serves as a stark reminder of the volatile situation in the region and the potential for escalation in the ongoing conflict.
