The New York Times has unveiled a new daily puzzle called “Strands”, offering a fresh take on the traditional word search. Described as a “trickier” version, Strands challenges players to find hidden “theme words” within a grid of letters.
Players manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to form words, with correct words highlighted in blue. Unlike a typical word search, finding non-theme words also provides benefits. Every three non-theme words of at least four letters earns a hint, revealing letters of a theme word to unscramble.
The puzzle features a unique “spangram” – a theme word (or words) that spans two opposite sides of the grid and describes the puzzle’s theme. Finding the spangram will highlight it in yellow.
The goal is to complete the puzzle quickly, minimizing the use of hints. Today’s theme is “I’ve got the music in me!”, with a hint suggesting a place where musical performances take place.
While Strands shares similarities with popular puzzles like Wordle and Connections, it presents a unique challenge. Players may find themselves needing help to solve the puzzle, which is readily available online.
In other gaming news, Monument Valley 3, the latest installment in the popular mobile puzzle series, is set to launch on Netflix on December 10th. The first two games will also be available on the service starting September 19th and October 29th.
