Fri Sep 20 08:57:55 UTC 2024: ## EU Pledges $180 Million to Ukraine for Energy Resilience Amidst Looming Winter Crisis
**Brussels, Belgium** – The European Union announced today that it will provide Ukraine with $180 million in energy funding, with $111 million of it coming from frozen Russian assets. The aid is intended to help Ukraine navigate a difficult winter, as Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure continue to wreak havoc.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that $67 million will be used for humanitarian aid, including shelters and heaters, while the remaining funds will be allocated to grid repairs and investments in renewable energy sources. “It is only right that Russia pays for the destruction it caused,” von der Leyen said, reiterating the EU’s commitment to utilizing frozen Russian assets to bolster Ukraine’s energy resilience.
The announcement comes as the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned of a potential energy crisis in Ukraine due to the escalating attacks on its power grid. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol highlighted the severe impact of the recent attack that damaged a significant portion of Ukraine’s infrastructure, adding that two-thirds of the country’s power generation capacity has already been lost.
“The winter energy demands could be a major issue for electricity and heating, not only for Ukrainian homes, but also for hospitals, schools, and communication networks,” Birol cautioned, suggesting possible consequences beyond the energy sector.
Meanwhile, the battlefield saw a continuation of aerial warfare, with Ukraine claiming to have successfully repelled a Russian drone attack involving 42 drones targeting multiple regions across the country. Ukraine’s air force also reported shooting down a Russian guided missile.
The attacks came a day after a Ukrainian drone struck a warehouse in Russia’s Tver region, triggering a large fire and prompting evacuations. The warehouse, according to Ukrainian officials, contained missiles, guided bombs, and artillery ammunition.
President Zelenskyy, in his nightly address, did not specifically mention the blast but hinted at its significance, stating that it weakened the enemy.
The EU’s energy assistance package represents a crucial step in supporting Ukraine’s efforts to rebuild its infrastructure and secure its energy supply during a crucial winter period.
