**KYIV, Ukraine** – The European Union has announced a significant financial commitment to Ukraine, pledging a loan of up to €35 billion ($39 billion) to help the war-torn country rebuild its economy and shattered infrastructure. This move comes as part of a larger $50 billion loan package orchestrated by the Group of Seven (G7) nations, with the goal of supporting Ukraine in its fight for survival.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during a visit to Kyiv, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that Russia’s relentless attacks necessitate further support. The loan, she said, will be used to bolster Ukraine’s financial stability and provide essential fiscal space, allowing the Ukrainian government to decide how best to allocate the funds.
This substantial financial assistance is underpinned by the windfall profits earned on frozen Russian assets, amounting to nearly $300 billion, largely held in EU nations. The EU hopes to see other G7 countries follow suit in providing loans.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted key priorities for the funds, including rebuilding the energy network, constructing bomb shelters, improving schools, and acquiring weapons and ammunition.
With winter approaching, the EU is focusing on helping Ukraine restore and reconnect its electricity grid, as around half of the country’s energy infrastructure has been destroyed during the war. The EU aims to help provide around 25% of the 17 gigawatts of power Ukraine is likely to need this winter.
Alongside this, the EU is also providing assistance to help Ukrainians stay within the country, with a significant number having fled since the war began. The European Commission has announced an additional €160 million ($180 million) to strengthen Ukraine’s energy network, with €100 million coming from windfall profits earned from frozen Russian assets.
The EU’s commitment demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting Ukraine’s resilience in the face of ongoing conflict and the approaching winter. This financial aid will be crucial for the country’s reconstruction and the well-being of its citizens.
