**London, UK** – Holding in your bowel movements, even for a short time, could have serious consequences for your health, according to medical experts. Dr. Janine Bowring, a Naturopathic doctor, has taken to TikTok to warn her millions of followers about the dangers of ignoring the urge to go.
“Never hold in your poop,” she advises. “It can cause constipation, which makes the stool sit longer in your digestive tract and lose water, leading to pain.” Dr. Bowring also highlights the risk of hemorrhoids and fissures, which can cause bleeding.
Dr. Zoe Williams, an NHS GP, echoes these concerns, stating that “our bodies need to do their thing, and regardless of the reason you’re ‘holding in’ your poo, it’s not good for your gut.”
A recent study from Monash University adds another layer of concern. Researchers found a shocking connection between constipation and major adverse cardiac events (MACE), including heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure. Individuals with constipation were found to be twice as likely to experience a MACE compared to those without.
“Our study suggests that constipation, a common yet often overlooked health issue, may be a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease,” said one of the study’s researchers. “Traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, and smoking have long been recognised as key drivers of heart disease. However, these factors alone do not fully explain the occurrence of major cardiac events.”
The study underscores the importance of addressing constipation, not only for digestive health but also for overall cardiovascular well-being. While lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise can often manage constipation, individuals experiencing persistent issues are urged to consult their healthcare provider.
